Part 2: Everything we’ve been taught about high-ticket sales is bullshit | Lead Magnets Are Dead

I started taking note of all the ads I saw this week about how to grow your agency — and believe me, it wasn’t hard. I get these all the time.

“Use this sales script to grow your agency.”

“Use this chat bot to grow your agency.”

“Use this cold messaging strategy to grow your agency.”

“Follow up 27 times with every prospect to grow your agency.”

“Build this 82-step funnel to grow your agency.”

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]YIKES.

There are several big problems with this attitude toward high-ticket sales.

It’s very masculine.

First, all of this is very complicated, it’s very linear, and it’s very masculine.

Jennifer Armbrust defines the characteristics of a masculine economy (in other words, the American capitalist system) versus a feminine economy. (P.S. You don’t have to be a male to perpetuate a masculine economy or female to participate in a feminine one. Just throwing that out there.) [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”10277″ img_size=”full”][vc_column_text]Spot any similarities to all those promises about how to grow your agency?

Those tactics are all about speed and efficiency, scarcity, competition, ownership, and they presume that your customer is going to think and act in a straight line (all those customer journeys and sales scripts they’re pushing.

But this just didn’t resonate with me — and it doesn’t resonate with most of the womxn I attract to my ads agency. We’ve tried these things, we’ve bought into them and implemented them to the letter… But it feels inauthentic, and, even worse, we’ve seen shitty results.

It’s very cookie-cutter.

Love me some cookies, but not when it comes to business.

To a hammer, every problem is a nail, right? So to these marketing and sales gurus, every problem requires a sales and marketing solution, right?

If you’re a sales trainer, that means the solution to growing an agency is in a very specific (and rigid, and fucking stupid) sales script.

If you build marketing funnels, then obviously the answer is in a complicated funnel.

If you’ve developed some software to automate cold outreach — DING DING DING! Cold outreach is the answer!

But not every problem is a nail, and not every business has the same customers, the same offer — which is why every time an ad says that EVERYBODY needs this or everybody will benefit, I get super suspicious and tend to run the other way.

It’s more labor intensive.

All these complicated funnels? These high-pressure sales scripts? These lengthy proposal and follow-up sequences? They’re a shit ton of work!

Part of the assumption here is that if you’re selling something that’s objectively more expensive, you have to work that much harder to find people and sell it.

We think we have to give more value, demonstrate our worth, bend over backwards to prove to the potential customer that they should pony up the big bucks to work with us.

But that’s seriously just our imposter complex talking. In my experience there is ZERO proof that you need to work harder to land high-paying customers.

It’s manipulative.

Probably the biggest thing that bothered me about all these tactics and strategies I was seeing and trying is that they felt manipulative, inauthentic, and gross.

I have tried to follow sales scripts with false urgency and high pressure tactics, but it’s way more fun to have a no-pressure conversation.

I’ve tried (and kinda sucked at) custom proposals and massive follow up, emailing people every other minute, and that just felt pushy and desperate. It also felt like a ton of wasted time.

I tried cold outreach and that felt like I was a fucking door-to-door salesman peddling my wares to anybody on the street.

None of it felt luxurious, upscale, deliciously supportive, and creative the way I wanted to feel in my business — and the way I wanted my customers to feel.

And let’s just take a quick sidebar here: too many womxn know intimately what it’s like to be manipulated in their lives. Our agency donates a percentage of our profits go to nonprofits that support women getting out of abusive relationships. So there’s literally no way I’m going to perpetuate that type of relationship or trauma in a business setting.

We’re making it WAY harder than it needs to be.

I didn’t like the way ANY of it felt, but maybe I could have got over some of it if any of it actually worked. But I still wasn’t seeing the kind of results I wanted.

It wasn’t until I said, “Fuck it!” and tried it my way — the easy way — that I realized we’re all making this way harder than it needs to be.

You don’t need a bazillion steps in your funnel.

You don’t have to start with content OR a freebie.

You don’t need a high-pressure sales script.

You don’t need to create false urgency.

You don’t have to do a custom audit or proposal.

And you don’t have to follow up a million times.

And here’s the most important part: my approach is easier, more authentic, and more aligned — but not at the expense of being successful and profitability focused.

We’ve been told that we can either feel good in our business or be successful.

I say we can be extra AF and have both.[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Click here to learn more about the stupid-easy way I attract high-ticket buyers.” color=”success” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fjenniferspivak.com%2Flead-magnets-p3%2F|||”][vc_column_text el_class=”next-text”]Next: Part 3: The stupid-simple way I reach and close high-ticket buyers[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” parallax=”content-moving” parallax_image=”10191″ parallax_speed_bg=”3″ disable_element=”yes”][vc_column][vc_column_text el_class=”box-style”]

  1. Most people aren’t getting results with Facebook ads (it’s not just you).
  2. We’re in the middle of a paid traffic “market correction”—and it’s going to sink a LOT of businesses who have built their sales process on the wrong foundation.
